Having trained as a nurse, I worked in an HIV inpatient unit in London before following my passion to become a professional singer, which I did for five years. After having my first children I was inspired to become a midwife and completed midwifery training at Kings College London in 1999. I worked within a caseloading team, loving the relational aspects of this model, and inspired by the supportive collegiality of our small team.
I moved with my family to Wiltshire, where I worked in a rural midwifery led unit. With a growing interest in public health, I trained to become a specialist community public health nurse (SCPHN) quickly gravitating towards and working with marginalised communities. I collaborated with partner agencies with a focus on safeguarding children and families.
In 2013 I helped to establish the Family Nurse Partnership (FNP) team in Bath before returning to London to become the FNP supervisor for the Southwark and Lambeth FNP team as well as practice development lead for the FNP National Unit. Within this role I developed a passion for education and practical application of research. This inspired a further master’s degree in advanced child protection. I am currently working as a lecturer at London South Bank University as well as providing antenatal education to local families.
I am interested in the psychosocial aspects of pregnancy and parenting and seek to promote relational approaches to midwifery and perinatal healthcare.
